Irish English: A First Impression

The Irish accent includes some key words to learn if you are a Canadian and want to sound Irish: lovely, brilliant, aye and wee. There are also some words that we use that may give the Irish some confusion. For instance what we call a "flashlight," is a "torch," a "trunk" is a "boot," "pants" are "trousers," a "jacket" is a "coat," a "sweater" is a "jumper," "supper" or "dinner" is "tea," "snack" is "supper," "underwear" are called "pants," a "truck" is a "lorry," a wrapped ice cream treat is a "lollypop," "running shoes" are "trainers," and lastly the "washroom" is a "bog."

i remember telling someone in switzerland once that english doesn't have dialects like german does. in southern germany and switzerland, people from villages only a few kilometers apart may not be able to understand each other's version of german, and would have to resort to high german (not something the swiss enjoy doing) to communicate.

sounds like i was wrong. how embarrassing to refer to pants and have them think you're talking about underwear!

love the pics and the news. i hope it's great. i must say, i'm jealous of your adventures. seeing your wonderful surroundings makes me want to get away from the 'peg for a while.

for now i'll just have to live vicariously through you!

i hope you feel the love pouring out of winnipeg!

Cool, the Brazilians like sending kisses! I just learned something about Brazil and Ireland in one post.

Jason and Niki, you guys are making me seriously jealous. The farthest I have travelled this year is to Dawson Creek, which is not even outside my province (although it is pretty far). Be assured that I am reading your blog and following your footsteps through beautiful Ireland. Like Elisabeth said, feel the love (from Vancouver, though)!
